Meet Donna

Donna Deegan is a proud Jacksonville native, award-winning local television news anchor, three time cancer survivor, and non-profit executive.

Deep Roots in Jacksonville

Her family has been rooted in Jacksonville since her great great grandfather, Jacob Hazouri, first immigrated to the U.S. and settled in Springfield. Her grandfather, Rufus, opened the beloved Roosevelt Grill on Ashley Street, frequented by the likes of Ray Charles and Hank Aaron.

After graduating from Florida State University, Donna started a career in broadcast journalism, which culminated in a role as a lead anchor at First Coast News. Over her tenure, she listened to and shared the stories of people living in every corner of this city, from all walks of life. She investigated many of Jacksonville’s systemic problems and held people in power accountable. Over her 25 years reporting, she established herself as a trusted voice for her community.

Called to Serve

Donna’s three bouts with breast cancer inspired her to bring her passion toward a new pursuit. After seeing fellow cancer patients and survivors saddled with debt and struggle to make ends meet, she was called to action and created the DONNA Foundation. In 2003, Donna founded the nonprofit to support the same community of patients, survivors, and health care providers who stepped up for her when she needed it most.

Ready to Lead

Under her leadership, the Foundation has provided financial assistance and support to more than 17,000 families living with breast cancer in addition to raising millions toward groundbreaking cancer research. Donna also founded 26.2 with DONNA, The National Marathon to Finish Breast Cancer – an annual event that draws runners from all over the world and generates millions in economic impact for Jacksonville each year.

Donna’s effective leadership across industries hasn’t gone without notice. She has received Jacksonville Business Journal Women of Influence Award, the Enterprising Women’s Leadership Award, the Florence Davis Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Florida Times-Union’s EVE Award for volunteer service.

Change for Good

As Mayor, Donna will bring her unique life experiences and longstanding commitment to this city to create meaningful, lasting change for Jacksonville – change for good.

When Donna’s not on the campaign trail, she can be found training for her next marathon, cheering on the Jaguars, catching a sunrise on the beach, or spending time with her husband, kids, and dog.
